(pasembur)。

The two-term assemblyman will fill the parliamentary seat earlier represented by Zairil Khir Johari.

Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai is eagerly looking forward to his duties as MP after GE14.

GEORGE TOWN: Incumbent Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai said he is ready to leave the state assembly for Parliament, in what he described as the next big leap for him in his political career.
He has been named the Bukit Bendera parliamentary candidate for DAP, replacing incumbent Zairil Khir Johari, who is contesting the Tanjung Bungah state seat.
Wong, 45, who is the Penang chief minister’s political secretary, said he wants to introduce legislative reforms in Parliament as well as draft policies for better housing.
“I am ready to take on duties in Parliament and introduce better reforms for a better Malaysia,” he said when met at the Tanjong Bungah DAP service centre here today.
Wong has served as state assemblyman for two terms since 2008 and is currently Penang DAP organising secretary. He was also formerly a state executive councillor for housing and the arts.
Before entering politics, he was a systems engineer at a multinational factory in Bayan Lepas, before taking up a degree in law in 2006.
The Bukit Bendera seat was won by Zairil in the last polls with a 32,778-vote majority. He defeated Gerakan’s Teh Leong Meng.
The population there is mostly made up of Chinese (74%), followed by the Malays (14%), Indians (11%) and others (1%).
In the fourth quarter 2017 electoral roll, there were 71,767 voters for the Bukit Bendera seat. In the 2013 polls, there were 71,085 voters.
Pulau Tikus candidate
Meanwhile, DAP’s candidate for Pulau Tikus Chris Lee Chun Kit is eager to engage his voters to discuss how to improve the neighbourhood and standard of living.
The 36-year-old Penang Island City Council member said his community-based focus would address traffic congestion in the area.
“It will be an honour to serve as the elected representative for Pulau Tikus,” he said when met by reporters after his candidacy was announced by the party leadership.
Lee was previously a business communication and English language lecturer before beginning work as a publicity executive at the Penang DAP headquarters in 2011.
In 2013, he was appointed Penang Island City Council councillor.
Pulau Tikus incumbent Yap Soo Huey had previously announced that she would not be contesting in the coming election as she is furthering her studies in the United States.
She won the seat with an 8,220-vote majority, beating Gerakan’s Rowena Yam in the last polls. The population there is predominantly Chinese (78%), followed by Malays (12%), Indians (8%) and others (2%).
The total registered voters in the Q4 2017 electoral roll is 17,825, a slight reduction compared with 17,936 voters in the 2013 polls.
