GEORGE TOWN: DAP leaders are not losing sleep over the endorsement of the PAS Syura Council to cut ties with the secular party.
Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari said he saw an opportunity in the crisis enveloping Pakatan Rakyat (PR) for more mature politics to emerge.
He indicated worries the break with PAS could affect DAP efforts to reach the Malay electorate was unfounded.
He said such initiatives had already begun even before PAS severed ties and pointed to the party's 'Impian Kelantan' program which has helped break new ground.
"We have helped to rebuild so many houses in Kelantan (where the majority of the population are Malays) after the severe floods last year," the Penang vice chairman said when contacted.
The PAS Syura Council on Saturday supported the decision to sever ties with DAP which was made by the muktamar (general assembly meeting) in early July.
The decision was made without debate and resulted in DAP also severing ties with the Islamist party.
Also on the same page was Wong Hon Wai, political secretary to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who said DAP had an established network which the party could tap.
He said support for the party could also be seen during "buka puasa" (breaking of fast) functions which drew sizable crowds.
"You can browse the Facebook of our elected representatives to see the good response," the Air Itam assemblyman told theSun.
Wong also said the decision of the Syura Council was a "fait accompli" (an accomplished fact) and pointed out the muktamar had already made the decision.
"It is time for us to realign our struggle with the progressive forces and I see this open new chapters in Malaysian politics," the Penang party treasurer added.
