Penang DAP Rep Claims Colleague Using A Copy Of Pledge That Limiting Penang CM’s Tenure Agreed Upon In 2008 Was Only A Draft

GEORGE TOWN, May 18 – Penang DAP organising secretary, Wong Hon Wai in responding to Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu’s claim, said the copy of the pledge with Teh was only a draft. He said Teh is merely trying to gain media attention by harping on his controversial bid to impose a two-term limit on the Penang chief minister’s tenure.
“Limiting the chief minister’s term of office was not approved by the DAP leadership after getting the views of various quarters including lawyers. Teh was not present on the pledge declaration event when the pledge was read out on March 6, 2008 at the Esplanade and there is no clause in the pledge mentioning the term of office (for the chief minister),” he said.
The Penang DAP organising secretary was responding to Teh’s claims that DAP candidates had pledged to limit the term of the chief minister in 2008. Teh had earlier shown a copy of the pledge written in Chinese to reporters, however, said the tenure stated in the pledge was for three terms.
Wong claimed that it was proof that the party leadership had agreed to the term limit but also admitted that the English version of the pledge did not contain that clause. When asked to comment on this, Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow also said the Chinese pledge was a draft.
Teh had submitted a motion to limit the term of the chief minister to only two terms for the third time this sitting but his motion was rejected based on a technicality. He continued to raise this issue during his debate and has said he will submit another motion for the next sitting in November.
