GEORGE TOWN, May 18 — Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu is merely trying to gain media attention by harping on his controversial bid to impose a two-term limit on the Penang chief minister’s tenure, according to fellow DAP assemblyman Wong Hon Wai.

He refuted claims by Teh that DAP candidates had made a pledge to limit the chief minister’s term back in 2008.

“He did not even attend the pledge declaration event at Esplanade on March 6, 2008,” Wong claimed in a press conference at the state legislative assembly today.

The Penang DAP organising secretary was responding to Teh’s claims that DAP candidates had pledged to limit the term of the chief minister in 2008.

Teh had earlier shown the media a copy of the pledges DAP candidates had made that was written in Chinese.

He claimed that it was proof that the party leadership had agreed to the term limit but also admitted that the English version of the pledge did not contain that clause.

Wong said the Chinese language pledge Teh produced was likely a draft that was not approved by the party leadership.

“It is not possible that other DAP candidates at the event like Karpal Singh, RSN Rayer and A. Tanasekharan read out the Chinese pledge in 2008,” he said.

Wong said DAP had already fulfilled all the clauses mentioned in the 2008 pledge, including implementing the Freedom of Information Act and the declaration of assets of all elected representatives.

When asked to comment on this, Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow also said the Chinese pledge was a draft.

“It was not approved by the state or national party leadership,” he said.

Teh had submitted a motion to limit the term of the chief minister to only two terms for the third time this sitting but his motion was rejected based on a technicality. He continued to raise this issue during his debate and has said he will submit another motion for the next sitting in November.
