DAP rep disappointed EC rejected objections against redelineation

A DAP assemblyperson has expressed disappointment over a letter he received from the Election Commission (EC) on Oct 17.

Air Itam assemblyperson Wong Hon Wai said the EC told him that his objections over the redelineation exercise did not warrant an investigation into the constituencies mentioned in his letter.
The EC said the area was not related to its recommendations for redelineation.

"I am disappointed with the EC's decision not to carry out an investigation in our constituencies although we have filed objections from 100 voters and by our elected representatives," Wong said in a statement.

"The procedure is in line with EC laws, and rejecting our objections is a violation of the people's democratic rights.

"It appears that EC will speed up its local investigation in the country as it plans to finalise and use the new boundaries in the coming national polls," Wong added.

Speculation is rife that Prime Minister Najib Razak may call a snap polls by March 2017 to consolidate power as the opposition bloc struggles with unity and integrity issues.

However, the deadline for the 14th general election to be called is by July 2018.

Wong said the same letter was sent to assemblypersons RSN Rayer (DAP-Seri Delima), Yeoh Soon Hin (DAP-Paya Terubong) and Ramkarpal Singh (DAP-Bukit Gelugor) who had all filed objections to the EC, which were supported by 100 voters.

Paya Terubong, Air Itam and Seri Delima state seats are under the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary constituency.

In his objections to EC on Oct 14, Wong urged Paya Terubong to be halved (into two seats) due to its large number of voters at 41,707.

"Other state constituencies only have between 12,000 to 50,000 voters," said Wong, who is Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's political secretary.

"Based on the Federal Constitution, the next redelineation exercise will only be carried out eight years from now.

"This means the next exercise will be carrried out at the earliest in 2025, if the voters' register is to be gazetted in 2017.

Paya Terubong voters will be more than 50,000 voters by 2025, as large as a parliamentary constituency, Wong warned.

"This is against the EC's one man one vote one value principle".
