GEORGE TOWN, Nov 1 — The Election Commission (EC) rejected all redelineation objections by the state assemblymen, voters and MP under the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary constituency, Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai said today.
He said the EC sent letters dated October 17 in response to the objections against the EC’s redelineation exercise stating that local inquiries will not be held based on their objections.
“The reasons they gave was that the constituency was not involved in the EC’s redelineation exercise,” Wong said when contacted today.
He added that they will now deliberate the issue with the state government’s legal team on the next step to take after this.
He later issued a statement expressing his disappointment with the EC’s response to their objections against the redelineation exercise.
“I sent in my objections to the EC on the reason that the Paya Terubong constituency should be divided into two constituencies,” he said.
He said the Paya Terubong state constituency now has 41,707 voters while other state constituencies only has between 12,000 to 20,000 voters each.
EC had rejected the objections by Air Itam, Paya Terubong and Seri Delima state constituencies and Bukit Gelugor parliamentary constituency. All three state constituencies are under Bukit Gelugor.
Wong said the objections were filed by the respective assemblymen and MP along with 100 voters from each constituency.
Under the Federal Constitution, the redelineation exercise must be conducted at least eight years after this exercise.
“This means the next redelineation exercise that can be conducted will be as early as 2025, assuming that the current exercise was gazetted in 2017,” he said.
Wong believed that the number of voters in Paya Terubong will exceed 50,000 by 2025.
“This means the number of voters for the state constituency will be as big as a parliamentary constituency,” he said.
“This is against the “one person, one vote, one value” principle which is a violation of the people’s rights,” he added.
Penang had sent eight objections sent to the EC; three for parliamentary constituencies, namely, Bukit Mertajam, Bukit Bendera and Bukit Gelugor and five for state constituencies; Air Putih, Sungai Pinang, Seri Delima, Air Itam and Paya Terubong.
The objections, filed by 100 voters of each constituency, assemblymen and the local council, were submitted before the deadline on October 14.
