GEORGETOWN: A heated argument broke out among three DAP backbenchers yesterday over a proposal to limit the tenure of the chief minister's post to two terms.
At the state assembly sitting yesterday, Teh Yee Cheu (DAP-Tanjung Bunga) raised the subject of limiting the CM's tenure and asked for it to be studied by a special committee.
He said the proposal also came from former opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
"The democracy process will gain more momentum should the chief minister's term be limited to two terms.
"I have proposed the motion in the sitting back in 2013 but no follow-up has taken place since then," Teh said.
This appeared to upset Soon Lip Chee (DAP-Jawi),who tried to interject in opposing the proposal but Teh demanded that he sit and continued debating.
Wong Hon Wai (DAP-Air Itam) joined in the fray to criticise Teh for not allowing Soon room to intervene.
Wong, who is also political secretary to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, sarcastically 'lauded' Teh's effort to bring up limiting the chief ministership tenure and hit out at the Tanjung Bunga representative for "not behaving like a gentleman" to give way for Soon in the debate.
Teh remained unflustered and said he did not need any 'praise' from Wong.
The war of words continued for about five minutes until Deputy Speaker Datuk Maktar Shapee asked both Teh and Wong to stop arguing.
The sitting continues today and will finish on Friday.
