Close to 3,000 medical students graduated in 2020, says minister
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 2,967 medical students graduated from higher learning institutions in 2020, says higher education minister Noraini Ahmad.
She said from this total, 958 graduates were from public universities (IPTA) and 2,009 from private institutions of higher learning (IPTS).
Noraini was replying to a question from Wong Hon Wai (PH-Bukit Bendera) on the number of graduates who had completed their studies in medicine in IPTA and IPTS from 2020 to 2021 and whether this number exceeded the job market demands.
He also asked what strategies had been implemented by the ministry to ensure there was a healthy balance between the job market and the country’s aspirations.
Noraini told the Dewan Rakyat that to ensure this, her ministry was closely monitoring the intake of students who took up medicine.
“Currently, this is determined based on the capacity of universities and the quota set by the Malaysian Medical Council.”
She said that under the health ministry’s 2016-2020 strategic plan, there was a target ratio of one doctor for every 400 citizens by 2025.
“To achieve this ratio, there needs to be an average of 4,000 new doctors every year,” Noraini said.
She added that her ministry will assess the intake capacity of medical students at public and private institutions of higher learning every five years.
“This is done based on the stringent assessment by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency to ensure the number of students is reasonable and according to the current needs of the country.
“The current intake capacity of medical students at all institutions in the country is 4,820 students.”
Noraini said the ministry was updating the approval mechanism for the establishment of new faculties and the offering of medical programmes through the establishment of the Technical Committee for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Dental Surgery programmes.
