PETALING JAYA: Bukit Bendera MP Wong Hon Wai has urged the Cabinet to beef up its cooking oil subsidy programme (COSS) in view of the imminent increase in the price of cooking oil locally.

This increase is linked to Indonesia’s latest decision to suspend the exports of cooking oil and crude palm oil beginning April 28 to stabilise prices in the country, according to Wong.

“The Cabinet must beef up COSS as Indonesia’s latest decision has a grave impact on the price of cooking oil in the Malaysian market.

“The government must utilise windfall profit levy and various taxes, as well as levies, contributed by the palm oil industry to relieve the burden borne by consumers,” he said in a statement.

Wong added that the government must ensure there was an adequate supply of cooking oil in the market and that prices are stable and affordable.

He highlighted that there had been reports of a shortage of subsidised cooking oil, sold in 1kg polybags, as well as smuggling of subsidised oil.
