GEORGE TOWN: A DAP assemblyman has renewed his call for those holding the positions of Chief Minister, Mentri Besar and Prime Minister to serve not more than two terms.

Teh Yee Cheu (DAP-Tanjung Bungah) said that the mechanism should not be limited to only the state Chief Minister's position, but also the MB and PM.

"It was also supported by Nga Kor Ming (DAP-Taiping) in 2011," he told the Penang State Assembly on Tuesday.

Wong Hon Wai  (DAP-Air Itam), however, said that in reference to the Westminster system, the election system is based on the vote of confidence.

"The system has been practised for 200 years in UK and there are no such term limits exercised.

"If the elected leader has committed something intolerable, they would have to step down immediately, and (there is) no need to wait until the end of the two-term limit," he said.

Teh's proposal was seconded by state Opposition Leader Datuk Jahara Hamid (BN-Telok Ayer Tawar) who told the sitting that new changes were needed in the spirit of "Penang leads".

"I request for Teh not to give up," she said.

It was reported that she had submitted a proposal to the state assembly to amend the state constitution and limit an individual from holding the chief minister's post for no more than two terms.

In the 2012 state assembly sitting, Teh had also proposed that the Penang Chief Minister and his two deputies serve two terms only.
