Fuel subsidies stay to ease burden of consumers

The government says the maximum prices for RON95 petrol and diesel will be maintained at RM2.20 and RM2.15 a litre, respectively.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will maintain its subsidies for RON95 petrol and diesel to reduce the burden of consumers, economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed said.

He said the maximum prices for RON95 petrol and diesel will stay at RM2.20 and RM2.15 a litre, respectively.

Responding to a question from Wong Hon Wai (PH-Bukit Bendera) in the Dewan Rakyat today, Mustapa said Malaysia’s energy security status is safe, in contrast to the energy crises currently happening in Europe, China and India.

“These countries are facing energy security crises due to the urgent need of fossil fuels for heating and to power-up their power plants,” he said.

“Malaysia’s energy security is intact due to diversification of our electrical energy sources such as coal at 47%, natural gas at 41%, and hydroelectric and other renewables at 12%.”

To an additional question from Wong on whether opposition MPs will be invited to take part in engagement sessions on fuel subsidy rationalisation and the National Energy Policy 2021-2040, Mustapa said the government will consider the matter.

“There are a few serious matters related to the energy topic that have to be decided. Insya-Allah, we will propose the idea to the finance ministry to have engagement sessions on the subsidy rationalisation and the National Energy Policy,” he said.
