PETALING JAYA: Bukit Bendera MP Wong Hon Wai has urged the auditor-general to conduct a special audit on financial transactions during the Emergency enforced at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wong Hon Wai.

Wong said a detailed report should be presented in Parliament.

He was responding to Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki’s statement yesterday that 25 investigation papers have been opened regarding the alleged mismanagement of Covid-19 financial transactions involving various offences.

MACC is investigating alleged corruption, malpractice and abuse of power in Covid-19-related procurements and the distribution of aid and stimulus packages during the pandemic.

The DAP member said he had previously called for the government to present financial details on government spending during the Emergency when the Dewan Rakyat was debating the motion to annul the seven Emergency ordinances.

He said this was especially important considering the exemption power provided to the executive under the ordinances.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) was also reported to have asked the auditor-general to conduct a special audit on government procurement and expenditure for medical services during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last week, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook urged Azam to be more transparent about MACC’s probes into corrupt practices during the pandemic and provide the public with more information, such as which ministries and departments were involved.
