Scrap Tajuddin’s appointment as envoy, MP urges PM
PETALING JAYA: A DAP MP has urged Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to scrap controversial MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s appointment as Malaysia’s ambassador to Indonesia, saying he lacks the necessary diplomatic skills needed for the job.
Bukit Bendera MP Wong Hon Wai said Tajuddin had proven he was unfit for the role of ambassador following a press conference he held yesterday as well as his conduct in Parliament previously.
“The role of public officials should be based on eligibility, experience and suitability of character, instead of political considerations,” he said.
Wong said the prime minister should not use his position to please those who supported him and yet were unsuitable for the role.
Ismail had previously defended Tajuddin’s appointment as ambassador, saying that it was approved by Indonesian President Joko Widodo and that he was a “seasoned and experienced politician”.
At a press conference yesterday, Tajuddin claimed that the majority of Umno division chiefs had wanted party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down from his post in 2020.
The Umno disciplinary board said it had yet to receive an official report regarding Tajuddin, and would only act after doing so.
Disciplinary board chairman Zulhasnan Rafique said party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan would notify the board of any disciplinary action to be taken against Umno leaders or members.
Last week, Tajuddin was removed as an Umno Supreme Council member in a letter signed by Ahmad, who thanked the Pasir Salak MP for services rendered.
